Walter John "Jack" Hopton, Jr., age 81 of Lawrenceville, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 after an extended illness. A funeral service was held Sunday, December 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Private Family Interment service followed at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs. The Family received friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Hopton was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary Sue Hopton and brother Frank R. Hopton. He is survived by his daughter Sherry A. Jenkins and her husband, Joe M. Jenkins of Dacula, GA. Grandchildren and spouses: Doug and Maria Stacks, Dacula, GA; Christopher and Valerie Jenkins, Cumming, GA; Jonathan and Gemma Jenkins, Stuttgart, Germany; Jason and Nicole Jenkins, Evans, GA; Amy E. Jenkins, Jacksonville, FL; seven great-grandchildren and 6 nieces and nephews. Special friends include, companion, Mary Graves of Hoschton, GA and her family.
Mr. Hopton was born September 9, 1922 in Nashville, Tennessee and moved to Atlanta in 1927. He was a graduate of the old Boys High School, attended Georgia Tech and graduated from John Marshall School of Law. He served as pilot with the Army Air Corps, stationed in England and Germany during World War II. After the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserves achieving the rank of Major. He worked in finance until his retirement.
