Harvey Eugene Chambers
Harvey E. Chambers, age 93 for Buford, GA died Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Harvey was born on July 10, 1921 at Fort Benning, a U.S. Army base located in Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties near Columbus, Georgia. His father was in the military at that time. Harvey was preceded in death by his father William Redden Chambers, his mother Catherine (Cassie) Linner and a half-brother J.S. Chambers.
He is survived by his wife Bettye Kirkland Chambers of Buford, GA - a son Barry Eugene Chambers of Jacksonville, FL - a step daughter Lisa S. Hoover, a step son Chris Hoover of Sugar Hill, GA and two step grandsons -- Michael and Joey Hoover -- half-sister Peggy Ussery and half-brothers Frank and Albert Chambers of Staten, GA along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Harvey spent his childhood in Valdosta, GA and Pittsburg, PA. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps primarily in the Philippines and Australia -- June 6, 1942 - November 1945. He worked for many years for General Motors as a zone service manager in Florida and Georgia and a training center instructor in Atlanta before retiring in 1981. Harvey and his wife are members of the Buford First United Methodist Church.
Harvey has been active in masonic work for many years and was a member of the Duluth Masonic Lodge in Duluth, GA where he served as lodge Tyler. He was also Ambassador to the Masonic Children's Home in Macon, GA. Harvey was an enthusiastic fundraiser for this home. He started the bicycle project at the Duluth Lodge where he, along with other lodge members, bought used bicycles, repaired and restored them to sell. All proceeds from these sales went directly to the Children's Home in Macon. Helping needy and orphan children was a passion for Harvey.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, December 1, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Dr. Sondra Jones will officiate. Interment will follow at Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens. The Family will receive Friends Sunday, November 30, 2014 from 5-7 PM at the funeral home. Flowers accepted or contributions may be made to the Masonic Children's Home in Macon, PO Box 4183 Macon, GA 31280 in memory of Harvey Chambers.
