Obituary of Jerry Rogers

Please share a memory of Jerry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joe Jerome “Jerry” Rogers, 84, of Buford, GA, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2020.

Jerry was born in Thomaston, GA to James and Lillian Rogers on April 2, 1936. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1954 where he played football, basketball and baseball, and held the single-season record for the highest high school batting average in Georgia until the 1970’s. He served two years in the U.S. Army and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He then worked for textile companies all over the southeast, eventually settling in Lilburn, GA where he retired from Coats America in 2000. Jerry was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Buford.

Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was also a curious and avid reader, had an intelligent and expertly timed sense of humor, was a great conversationalist who was always more interested in hearing about others’ lives than in talking about himself, and was always quick with a Thank You and a smile, no matter his circumstances.

Jerry is survived by Fran, his loving and devoted wife of 59 years; their son, Andy Rogers, and his wife Shelley, along with grandchildren Nate and Leila Rogers; their daughter, Lee Axelberg and her husband, Brad, along with grandchildren Ansley Bourchier, and her husband, Dustin, Madison Ellis, and Kourtney, Olivia and Emma Axelberg, and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha and Carson. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy, and his great-granddaughter, Emery.

A graveside service handled by Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel and Gardens will be held for the family on Thursday, June 4th at Memorial Park South Cemetery, Flowery Branch, with a celebration of Jerry’s life to be held at a later date.
