Soon after coming to work at CDC in 1984, I realized that the person you wanted to be best friends with was John Hughes. He was the pivot point for actually getting things done. Seemingly gruff, he was actually one of the warmest and kindest people I've known. For most of our time working together, his place was just across from our lab, right near the stairs, water fountain, and bathroom. We had countless minute-long conversations as we bumped into each other, usually talking about something funny, strange, or just plain stupid. And we most always agreed on the big picture, not sweating the details. John was as ethical and principled as a person can be, but he wasn't judgmental, and I never heard him say anything demeaning about anybody, ever. Through his organization and efficiency, he played a major role in the growth of our division, and he was a great liaison to the upper management. Since he retired, all of us who knew him have missed him, and we can kind of imagine how much he will be missed by those closest to him. My deepest condolences to his family and his community. He was truly a good guy, the kind of person we need so heartily in these modern times. May God Bless his soul and his spirit, and help us to be eternally grateful for the gift of having known him.
