Obituary of Carol Conkel

Surrounded by family and friends, Carol LaDane Conkel of Buford, Georgia, went to be with her Heavenly Father October 1, 2021. She was 80 years old.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Eldon Conkel; parents, Lucille and Bernard Shumway; daughter, Candy; and brother, Ken Shumway.

Carol loved her family. She and Eldon had 6 children: LuAnn (Stephen) Oliver of Upper Arlington, Ohio; Jim (Tammy) Conkel of Buford, GA; Elaine (Jim) Jividen of Flowery Branch, GA; Candy Conkel, (deceased); Randal (Keri) Conkel of Jefferson, GA; and Cassie (Ben) Neubauer of Buford, GA. Carol had 10 grandchildren: Sean (friend, Eleanor) Oliver of Columbus, Ohio;  Hannah Oliver-Bleam (Ryan) of Scottsdale, Arizona;  Tori (Calebb) Proehl of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Grant (Alejandra) Oliver of Denver, Colorado;  Madison (Mitchell) Fucetola of Atlanta, GA; Conner (fiancée, Lexie) Conkel of Buford, Georgia; Bryce and Jacob Conkel of Jefferson, Georgia;  and Claire and Henry Neubauer of Buford, GA.  Carol had 3 great-grandchildren: Lucy and Oni Proehl, of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Caroline Bleam of Scottsdale, Arizona. Other survivors include brother, Ben (Rita) Shumway; sisters-in-law Jean (Ken) Shumway, Betty (Curt) Conkel; and many nieces and nephews.

Born June 18, 1941, Carol was the oldest of 3 children born to Bernard and Lucille Shumway. Born and raised in Minford, Ohio, Carol was a Christian woman and an active member at Hamilton Mill Christian Church. She enjoyed spending time with church friends and participating in outings with The PT Cruiser’s group. Carol loved The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cincinnati Reds, the Atlanta Braves and Southern Gospel music.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel and Gardens. Minister Bob Mahan will be officiating. The family will receive friends and family at 12:30 pm.

Carol will be laid to rest beside her husband, Eldon, and daughter, Candy, at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel and Gardens. The entire family would like to personally thank sister-in-law and friend, Jean Shumway, for giving of her time, helping care for Carol, providing emotional support and guidance to the family, and for always being a “sister” to Carol. Also, a special thanks to niece, Anita Carver, for being another “daughter” to Carol.
