On Friday, July 8, 2022, Stewart F. Lyman, passed away at age 83 in Dacula, GA. He was a beloved father and grandfather, a respected businessman, and a Christian.

 

Stewart was born on July 31, 1938 in Columbus, GA to William and Helen Lyman. He attended Darlington School in Rome, GA before moving to Atlanta, GA, where he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Management.

 

When asked what he did for a living, Stewart often said, "I'm just a bubble gum salesman", referring to his job as an executive with the Donruss Company in Memphis, TN. He also served in executive roles with Tom's Foods in Columbus, GA, Smith & Nephew in Memphis, TN, and Polyvend in Conway, AR.

 

It was in Memphis that Stewart met Gayle Mitchell, to whom he was married for 41 years until her death in 2014. Stewart and Gayle retired to Destin, FL in 1997 where he was able to indulge in his favorite hobbies of golfing and fishing. Stewart's Christian faith was an essential part of his life, and he was very involved at Destin United Methodist Church, as well as in his community where he volunteered weekly for many years at Sacred Heart Hospital.  

 

Stewart loved country music and sports, especially college football and golf. Most Saturdays in the fall were spent trying to find the Yellow Jackets' game on TV and cooking burgers on the grill. He also enjoyed a good spy novel and watching history documentaries.

 

Stewart was preceded in death by son, Stewart Fleming Lyman, Jr. and wife, Carol Gayle Lyman. He is survived by his daughter Ginny (Cutts) Benedict, son Steve (Debbie) Lyman, daughters Laura (Marvin) Bales and Lesley Lyman, and son Bert Lyman. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
