Good morning Claire,
Patrick and I have been chatting away during a trip to a match this morning. Patrick wanted me to share this story will you. If you wish to read it during the service please do. It certainly makes us giggle.
Many years ago Steve asked us to be pit crew for him at one of his races at Road Atlanta. We were excited but we think he was even more excited. On race day we set up the tent, you could feel adrenaline in the air. Not too mention the smell of race fuel...oh boy that seems to be the ultimate mans cologne. His class was towards the end of the day as we recall and it was so much fun to watch all the super fast cars wizzing by. Steve & Patrick puttered around shining the car, checking tire pressure and such. Just before his class was to run Patrick helped him put on his white nomex suit, gloves, booties and top it with his white helemt. Patrick helped him into the car and tighten the 5 point harness. Steve always made sure he was nice and safe. Out on the track he goes to take his place in the pack that was 2 lanes wide. The engines all reving up, the flag waves and they are off.... a minute or so later the leaders start zooming by zoom, zoom zoom. We are watching with anticipation zoom, zoom....and then we see him putt putting by. Patrick is like oh gosh is something wrong his time is 2.5 minutes on a 2.5 miles track. Maybe his just got caught in some traffic on the 1st lap. He'll be better this time around...zoom,zoom here come the leaders...waiting watching and right on que at 2.5 min he comes. Putt putt putting by. It didnt matter though you could see the smile on his face even with the helmet on. Steve was gonna do it his way! That was how he lived his life. That his how he would like everyone to live their life, what ever it is you do, do it as well as you can and make sure you enjoy it.
We love you Steve and wish you a great journey beyond the checkered flag ,
Wendy, Patrick and Duncan
