Odus Millard Peevy, who was Clerk of Superior Court in Gwinnett County from 1961 to 1984, died March 22, 2012, at his home in Buford, following an extended illness at the age of 87. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 3PM, at First Baptist Church, Buford. Rev. Wayne Johnson and Rev. Matt Stacy will officiate. Interment will follow at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-9 at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted, or those who wish may send contributions to First Baptist Church, Buford. Millard was a native of Gwinnett County, born on October 27, 1924 at Route 1, Old Peachtree Road, Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was the son of the late Odus Lee Peevy and Beatrice Roebuck Peevy of Gwinnett County. He attended schools in Gwinnett County and graduated from Buford High School. He attended Moler Barber College, received his Master's license, and thereafter owned and operated his own barber shop business from 1947 to 1960. Millard served in World War II in the United States Army Medical Corp for three years; two of those years in the European Theater of Operations. He was married for 69 years to the former Marie Puckett, daughter of the late Bolden Puckett and Dessie Thornhill Puckett of Buford, Georgia. In 2008, Millard was recognized by the American Legion Post #127 in Buford for 60 years of continuous membership. In 1964, while serving as Commander of Post #127, Millard spear-headed a reorganization and expansion of the Little League and Dixie League Baseball programs by adding new baseball fields, concession stands, parking lots and lights on 18 acres of American Legion property by Corporate Charter filed in the Office of The Secretary of State, and known as "Greater Buford Athletic Associations, Inc" (G.B.A.A.). While the non-profit charter was authored by Millard, he was joined by W.R. (Dudge) Pruitt and J.D. West as the Petitioners. This Charter, which has now served for more than 40 years, was put in place to serve both boy's baseball and girls' softball programs for the community at large. Millard was a life long Democrat and served on the Democratic Executive Committee for eight years. He was also a Charter member of the Buford Lions Club, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Buford; and for a period of time, a volunteer Fireman on the Buford Volunteer Fire Department. In 1995 the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce recognized him with their "Public Service Award." In 1981 he was awarded "Boss of The Year" by the Gwinnett County Legal Secretaries Association from 1980-1982. He also served on the Counsel of Superior Court Clerks, for the 9th District of Georgia.
