In the early 1980's when I was a training manager at Digital here in Atlanta, I needed to hire a training registrar. I interviewed Daryl and wanted to hire her, but my fantastic boss Pete Wyatt said, "You two strong headed women will never be able to work with one another." Well, I hired her anyways, and we made a terrific team for many years. Then our friendship continued long after our days at Digital.
I will never forget an early conversation I had with Daryl, the new registrar, while I was on a business trip. We were talking over the phone about her day at the office, and she asked me, "How's your mating?" I was obviously in shock at her question, so I asked her to repeat it. Once again I heard, "How's your mating?" After shaking my head at why this lady would ask such a question, I put my brain in gear. It finally dawned on me that in southern speak she was asking, "How's your m-e-e-t-i-n-g (meeting)?" Lesson: I was going to have to learn to understand southern accents!
Daryl and I were both part of Digital families. Our husbands worked for DEC, and two of Daryl's sons also worked for DEC.
I remember our intense dislike of some of our later bosses at DEC. They shall remain nameless, but I doubt they are here anyways. She and I stuck together to survive those tough times in the office.
Back to family--I can still hear Daryl voicing her concern that none of her children were getting married. Then, so suddenly all four were married. Then there was the joy of her first grandchild. Now that I have my first grandchild, I understand that great emotional tie. Then all the other grandchildren completed her wonderful family.
Daryl was such an organized person. I thought I was organized until I got to know Daryl. Who else do you know who could get a high school diploma with four toddlers in the house? Who else do you know that had all her Christmas shopping done by the 4th of July! I was so envious of her, when I was out there with all those crowds in December. I also have fond memories of her collection of Hallmark motion ornaments and the one she gave me of a train chugging along in the snow.
For several years my husband Frank and I had a pig roast in July. Daryl and Richard came to enjoy the fun with many others from our extended Digital families.
In recent years a few of us former DEC ladies, and sometimes Richard too, would occasionally get together for lunch. I recall the delicious strawberry trifle Daryl sometimes made. One time she also baked a fabulous peach cobbler for the office.
Then came the quilting. What a special talent both Daryl and Richard had for this. Their work was exquisite. I will forever cherish my red hat society quilt and my Christmas tree skirt. Just a few weeks ago Daryl had lunch with my daughter, my grandson, and me. She presented my grandson Frankie with a precious Sesame Street quilt--a gift my daughter and grandson will treasurer forever.
There is only one good thing I can think of regarding Daryl's passing. She won't have to mourn the ending of the 54-yr old soap opera "As the World Turns," the last episode of which aired this very afternoon, September 17, 2010, and ended at 3 PM Eastern time.
Thank you, Daryl, from the bottom of my heart, for being my dear friend for all those years.

I knew Darly from Digital Equilment Corporation and then also as a quilter. Wonderful Lady. "May a chorus of angels come to greet her, May they speed her to paradise, May the Lord enfold her in his arms, May she find eternal life."

My story echoes Sharon's...Mrs. Hood was also very kind to me when I was a kid and her kindness has never been forgotten. Nor will it ever be. I, too, remember a house with neighborhood kids running in one door and out the other...and always being made to feel welcome. Mrs. Hood took a personal interest in each of us and treated us like family. The Hoods are very special and dear to me...every one of them...and I grieve with them for their, and our, loss.

I remember her sitting in her chair watching her soap operas as Susan and I ran in and out of the house all summer long. She had a funny sense of humor. I also remember her picking me up from school a couple of times when I wasn't feeling well. She watched over me and treated me just like one of her own kids. She was my "back up" mom when my mom was at work or out of town. I was so glad to reconnect with her on Facebook. It was awesome seeing a change in her spirit but she was still "Daryl". I feel so lucky to have gotten to know her again. Today you are free because of the past. Celebrate Daryl and go find my Mom and Dad. Give them a hug for me. Till He comes, Sharon...
