Harrison "Harry" Tatum Ferris, age 60, of Buford, GA, died Sunday, July 4, 2010. Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 8, 2010, at 2 PM at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church. Dr. David Davis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hamilton Mill UMC, 1450 Pine Road, Dacula, GA 30019, www.hmumc.org , or to the Atlanta Masonic Library & Museum, C/O Danny Wofford, 1690 Peachtree Rd. N.W., Atlanta, GA 30309.
Mr. Ferris was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra Freeman Ferris and Norma Jane Ferris. He is survived by his wife, Jana Ferris, of Buford; Daughter and Son In-law, Erin Ferris & Matthew Greg Schneider, of Goose Creek, SC; Grandson, Cooper Harrison Schneider, of Goose Creek; Brother and Sister In-Law, Robert Ezra and Deborah Renee Ferris, of Franklin, TN.
Mr. Ferris had lived in the Metro Atlanta area for the past 16 years. He was a dedicated and passionate member of Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church. As a child, Harrison became an Eagle Scout. On March 6, 1979, Harrison was raised as a Master Mason at Rising Star Lodge #4 in Eatonton, GA. In 1994, Harrison retired as a Commander from the United States Naval Reserve, Medical Service Corps, where he served six tours CO and XO positions in acute care, combat support planning, and medical logistics. He served eight years on active duty. He also received the National Defense Service Medal. After retirement, Harrison worked as a Hospital Administrator with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).
In March of 1996, Harrison was inducted into the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Atlanta, Orient of Georgia, where he achieved the level of 32 nd degree KCCH Scottish Rite. He was a cast member of "The Traitor", a charter member of the W. Joe Clarke York Rite College #203, and a Standard Bearer for the Arnold de Troye Commandery #31.
Harrison was also a life sponsor of the Knight's Templar Eye Foundation, a member of the Grand College of Rites, and a member of Scottish Rite Research Society. He was inducted into the D.H. Keever Council #365 Allied Masonic Degree, and also inducted into the Royal Order of Scottland. He was a published Masonic author, a member of the Buford Masonic Lodge #292 F&AM, and a member of the Fulton Masonic Lodge #216 F&AM.
