Mrs. Russell was one of my best teachers and one of the smartest people I know. I have been through the Ivy League and constantly remembered and mentioned my AP World History teacher, who taught me the most about history and the world, to everyone. I maxed the SAT IIs in world history and honestly only studied for a week because I had already learned everything so well from her class! To this day I owe my understanding and respect of other cultures to her unbiased, comprehensive, and always fascinating teaching. I still use her mnemonics!
I especially admired her accurate and extensive coverage of Islamic History, which was honestly more rigorous than most college world history contexts. At a time when states are trying to erase this extensive, accurate Islamic history and contributions of the world from their textbooks, Mrs. Russell's legacy is especially important. I wish she could lecture those who are ignorant and hateful in our time of world history, and that we owe the blessings we enjoy today to the cultural sharing and contributions of so many different cultures.
She also inspired me to travel in Europe, and I didn't even need a guidebook because she had taught me so much!
I think of her often and tried to find her contact info in retirement, but wasn't able to. When I saw this obituary I was so sad. May she rest in peace and her legacy live on. And may God bless her family.

Manny and I want to extend our condolences to Elizabeth's family— and I want to send a special hug to Michael whom I knew in his childhood. Elizabeth was one of my very best friends from elementary school through Lamar University, and she was the Matron of Honor at our wedding. I have many fond memories of innumerable hours just hanging out together—and in our younger years being driven around to events by her mom, Tommye-- or occasionally by Aunt Ruth or Aunt Lois.
In her formative years, Elizabeth was an old soul in the sense of being precocious and articulate beyond her years. We celebrated one of her high school birthdays by the two of us flying from the Port Arthur-Beaumont airport to Houston (just to have our first airline flight ever with each other) and attending a concert by her musical favorite at the time, Dave Brubeck (famous jazz pianist) (note: not a rock concert which would have been far more popular in the early 1960s for the typical-- thus far-less-evolved than Elizabeth-- high school student). We could not have pulled off this fun fledgling-to-adult escapade without the shepherding of one of Elizabeth's aunts (Lois?) in Houston.
In our academic years, we were very good for each other as we had a totally friendly competition going whether for grades or for any sort of extra-curricular accolades. In our dating years, we double-dated often. Sadly, we lost touch in our adult years living on opposite ends of the country and being immersed in our kids and our careers.
I feel blessed to have known Elizabeth so well in our "school years" and to have the opportunity to read entries on this website about her impact on her students and colleagues in her teaching years.
And truly, deep friendship is truly forever across both space and time---
May the force of all that is good be with her and her loved ones,
Sue

Elizabeth Russell was an outstanding and inspiring teacher whose love of European history pushed her students to think about the world in new ways. She took risks to create effective learning environments beyond the classroom and she nurtured students (I will never forget the day she noticed I was sleep deprived and told me to put my head down during class to get some rest). Ms. Russell, you inspired my own journey as a teacher and researcher. I am forever indebted. Thank you. You are dearly missed.

Elizabeth was an outstanding teacher who became and remained a friend to many students long after Roswell High School. Her classes were oasises in the hectic life of a teenager.
One of my best memories was listening to Debussy during one of her "catchup" days. She made history come alive and gave me a lifelong passion of the subject.
My thought are with her family. She touched many, many lives and we are all better for it.

To Ms. Russell, teaching was a calling. She was wholeheartedly devoted to her students and their growth. To this day, I consider it a blessing to have considered her a mentor both intellectually and personally. Thank you, Ms. Russell, for all that you were and all that you encouraged us to be. Thank you for instilling Positivity, and for helping me to discover my purpose as a bridge builder early on. Your values and impact live on through the hundreds of students you deeply touched.
You are missed.

To teach with Elizabeth was an absolute joy. Rarely was there a day when she didn't begin and end her days at Roswell High with a smile and laugh. Whether preparing for the AP Euro exam or planning one of her many Anchor Club projects she embodied what was the very best about a very special school and Social Studies Department. I often tell people just how fortunate I was to work with such an exceptional group of people and Elizabeth was simply that.....exceptional.

I've known Elizabeth for about 48 years . She was a wonderful lady who had a great sense of humor and loved her children greatly . Our children grew up together . We got together as couples and play board games and card games and had the best time . I remember us going to the Houston zoo taking the kids and she and I spent most of the day together talking watching the kids play . She was and intelligent kindhearted funny lady that I was blessed by having the opportunity to know her . Susan R.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of Elizabeth Russell, a valued friend and former faculty member of Roswell High School. To her lovely family, I want you to know you're being thought of with deepest sympathy at this difficult time. May these warmest thoughts of sympathy help in some small way to ease your loss and sadness. I would be remiss in not sharing a few thoughts with the hope of you gaining a better appreciation of Elizabeth being the perfect blend of parent, master teacher, confidante, and friend. We all owe her a huge debt of gratitude for the service and contributions she made to Roswell High School and the indelible positive imprint she made on the many students she taught over the years.
There can be no more nobler and satisfying task in life than to be a teacher. Well, Elizabeth was one of the best! She had the ability to stimulate her World History and Advanced Placement European History classes with her energy and intellect. As her department chair for many years, I had the opportunity to observe first hand her ability to provide an environment to keep her students actively involved and motivated. Her classes were always fun, exciting, and satisfying. She was truly an innovator as her creativity was legendary. She was the master of the Macintosh computer, using it to meticulously plan, design, and create activities of her own design to lead further drama to history. Not being overly enthralled with the maps at her disposal and being the consummate cartographer, she created numerous map transparencies to augment her students learning.
She was also a master of integrating innovative activities as a change of pace during a particular lesson. One of my fondest and most popular teaching techniques Elizabeth employed was her "no notes days", where students would just be able to sit and listen, enthralled as she graphically expounded on a variety of subjects. Her teaching personally influenced me and I'm sure others to give up their staid and stale methods of teaching and adopt novel and interactive ways of presenting information, while always being willing to share. Besides her teaching abilities, Elizabeth loved her students. She was not only able to inspire and challenge but established a mutual respect and rapport with her students. She was always concerned not only with their education but also with their growth as individuals. Elizabeth took pride in staying in touch with her students as they continued in life, rejoicing in their achievements. She was no doubt one of the Roswell High School's most beloved teachers.
Besides teaching five classes a day, she was actively intertwined with the entire fabric of Roswell High School. She was the sponsor of the Anchor Club, the largest and most active service organization at the school. The club's quarterly teacher appreciation breakfasts orchestrated by Elizabeth, who used her gourmet culinary skills, were legendary. She was always present at a variety of school events, whether they were scholastic, choral, orchestral, or athletic. Why? Easy! It was her love for her students and of Roswell High School.
As her department chair and fellow teacher, I can say without trepidation that one of the best days in my life was when Elizabeth came to Roswell as a teacher. I can't express how much she meant to the department. We all couldn't wait for the next birthday within the department to celebrate as we anxiously waited for either her scrumptious carrot or red-velvet cakes in honor of the celebrant. To put it simply, your presence made our department and school infinitely better. Thank you for everything you have given us and your students, and for leaving a permanent imprint and lasting impression on Roswell High School and everyone associated with it. Rest in peace.

Mrs. Russell was one of my favorite teachers at RHS. I fondly remember her "No Notes" days, where she stood in front of the class and made history come alive through her stories of medieval battles and Machiavellian kings (and queens). She was an excellent teacher but an even better person, able to tame a bunch of loud and rather obnoxious teenage AP "nerds" with wit, humor, and most of all, kindness. She will be missed. - Jason Love, RHS class of '92

Mrs. Russell was one of the best teachers I ever had. She made history come alive and learning became a delight, not a task to complete. I looked forward to AP Euro every day, even the crazy busy days of senior year. Her kindness and laughter, patience and grace, and understated elegance gave me much to emulate. What a gift it was to know her.
