Obituary of Glenn C. Jones

Mr. Glenn C. Jones, age 97 of Buford, Georgia died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 after a brief illness. Funeral Service was held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Buford. Rev. Rodney Peavy, Rev. Danny Newbern and Dr. Richard Holland officiated. Interment followed in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Buford. The Family received friends on Thursday, December 13, 2007 from 5 to 9 PM and Friday, December 14, 2007 from 12:30 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 3390 South Puckett Road, Buford, Georgia 30519. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Jones. He is survived by his children, Carrie Ann Millwood, Braselton, Norma and Leslie McGuire, Commerce, Shirley Akins, Winder, Glenda and Grady Peavy, Buford, Harry Glenn and Delores Jones, Gaffney, SC; 10 Grandchildren; 21 Great Grandchildren; Sister In-law, Barbara Jones, Buford; Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Mr. Jones was born November 22, 1910 and was a life long resident of Gwinnett County. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 61 years, served as Deacon for 60 years and music leader for 30 years. Mr. Jones began his career in education at Bethesda School in the fall of 1932. His 41 year career ended when he retired from Harmony Elementary School after serving as Principal for 35 years. For many of us Mr. Jones taught 3 generations of our family. He did whatever was necessary to meet the needs of his students. During his career he served as school bus driver, basketball coach, teacher and principal. He was instrumental in securing a new gymnasium and started one of the first school lunch programs at Harmony Elementary. He received the 2007 School Bell Education Award from Oglethorpe University. Mr. Jones was honored by the citizens of Gwinnett County by naming a new middle school after him, the Glenn C. Jones Middle School in Buford. He always gave much credit for his success to his wife Agnes and was most proud when Glenn C. Jones M.S. named their library The Agnes Jones Media Center. There are few people who touched as many lives as Glenn and Agnes Jones.
