My deepest condolences for the loss of your dear loved one. While nothing will completely take away your grief by meditating on Gods promises found in the Bible you can find real hope and the strength to keep going. My family and I have found the scripture at Isaiah 25:8 to be especially comforting. Here it promises that God "will swallow up death forever and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces."

My condolences to the Harkins family. It is a painful thing to lose a precious love one in death. Even Jesus wept when Lazarus died (John 11:35) and it pains Our Heavenly Father. He did not purpose his human family to get sick and die but purposed us to live and enjoy life in perfect health. It is still his purpose (Psalm 37:11, 29). He calls death an enemy that will be removed forever__1 Corinthians 15:26 “the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing”; Sickness will be a thing of the past_ Isaiah 33:24 ”and no resident will say, “I am sick”; and He promise to awaken our love ones in the memorial tombs from asleep in death__ Hosea 13:14 “From the power of the Grave I will redeem them; From death I will recover them.” Allow these words to keep comforting all of you.

Harkins Family:
Please know that you have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
As you already know, your dad was such an amazing person and this world is such a better because of all of us whom he touched. Like so many, I feel blessed to have known your dad.
In my "working through" my own loss of your dad, I actually found "Remember Me," a poem by the English painter and poet, David Harkins.

Do not shed tears when I have gone but smile instead because I have lived.
Do not shut your eyes and pray to God that I'll come back but open your eyes and see all that I have left behind.
I know your heart will be empty because you cannot see me but still I want you to be full of the love we shared.

You can remember me and grieve that I have gone or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.

Amazing words and even more amazing because I hear them in your dad's voice, as I read the poem.
So, I will open my eyes and see all that your wonderful dad has left behind for each of us, cherish his memory and let it live on and smile, wipe away the tears, love all and carry on.
While I will always miss my calls with your dad starting with our customary "O Captain! My Captain!" quote and hearing of his most recent travels and your sports, and his personal and professional advice, I will always fondly remember him and think of all of you and smile when WV wins (like tonight, 57-54 hoops win over Baylor) or when we enjoy a great movie that I know he would enjoyed as well.
Please know that each of you is in our thoughts and prayers and that we will always remember him.

My heart breaks for the Harkins family. David was one of the best bosses I've ever had, but most importantly, one of the best human beings I've ever known. It was clear family and faith was everything to him. He was always encouraging to me, but especially this past year as I faced my own battle with cancer. His positivity was contagious. He will truly be missed. I pray for peace and comfort for the family.

I am sorry to hear of David's passing. I worked with him at USPI and have such fond memories of many, many conversations. When we moved to Atlanta in early 2017, I re-connected and we were able to meet for lunch.
David was such a sweet guy and would do anything for anyone. We talked about our faith and how important it was to both of us.
You will be missed, David.

David Alan was such a great childhood friend. Just knowing I would see an occasional post of his beautiful family helped me still feel connected to that friendship. I was saddened to hear about David. He was such a great guy. He was one of the biggest fans for the Lady Mt. Lions basketball team when he attended TCHS. I have nothing but positive things to say about David and happy memories of him. Prayers of comfort for his family and friends. He now has the best seat in the house to watch WVU games. It might not be coincidence that the men’s basketball team is ranked number two for the first time since 1959...God bless.

The Harkins Family,
I am just at a loss for words. I can feel the pain and emotions that you all are going through. I only wish I could be in Atlanta with all the family. I say family because that is what I consider the Harkins family, my second family. David fought the good fight, as they say. He was strong and positive up until he couldn't do it anymore. I remember receiving a call from him when he was first diagnosed way back when. I was in remission from my own battle and he was upset as we spoke. I reassured him that he was strong and to stay positive and battle it. We laughed and said this stuff can't take down true Mountaineers!! I shared my story with him and he, knowing me, said if I could beat it then he knew he could. It was sort of a challenge to him. In the following years we spoke briefly and he would text me to keep me updated on his progress and how he was doing. Then in June I was diagnosed with Lymphoma and we shared text messages again, up until the last one I received in October. I was honored and blessed to have been able to communicate with him throughout. I could be a sounding board and, as I hoped, something positive in his battle. I will share a memory. We, Big Dave Harkins and I, made some trips to Pittsburgh with a group of young kids to see the Pirates play. This was in the late '70's early '80's. One trip I had too many adult beverages and coming home, while I was resting my eyes, the guys stacked baseball caps on my head and got a couple of pictures. Oh, I will miss David, the texts and I have very fond memories of him. My condolences go out to his family, Kathy and the kids. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting them, I hope to someday. I can tell you that David lived for you all and every time we conversed, phone call or text, there was a mention of all of you. Sorry this was so long, I just can't say enough. God bless the Harkins family. David is walking the streets of heaven, getting ready for Cincinnati spring training.
