We were so very sorry to hear of Jim's death. I was a student of his in 2000 after we bought our house and he has been out several times to do plans for our yard as we developed it. He was funny and smart and cryptic and a delight to be around. He obviously loved his family and respected our military but the most fun thing was the reverence we shared for food, especially hot dogs, which he often described as the almost perfect food. He will be very missed! Our sympathy is with Pat and his family.

I am so blessed to have met Jim 2 months before he transitioned to Heaven, Though seemingly weak, he agreed to complete a landscape design for me. However, Jim did not complain once about his condition but instead found reasons to give thanks to God. It was very apparent that he felt very close to God in performing his "job". I am nearing completion of the design he created for my yard and will remember Jim every time I gaze upon my beautiful landscape that has Jim and God's signature written broadly across it.
Be at peace, Collins Family.

We are saddened to hear of Jim's passing. Pat, you and Jim were wonderful neighbors and we looked forward to your cheerful landscaping around the clubhouse over the years. We missed you when you moved and are sorry we never had the chance to say goodbye to such a wonderful neighbor and friend.
We also loved the newsletters and Jim's valuable, humorous, loving advice and wisdom. We hope you will find peace in the knowledge that his suffering has ended and that you will surely see him again.
Much love to you and your family. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Collin Family--although I never personally met Jim I feel as though I knew him personally from his newsletters. I shared them with my father before he transitioned in February 2013. He always thought it was admirable of Jim to end each newsletter with a thought for the men and women who protect our country. Jim was a true soldier and will truly be missed. May he rest in Christ.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing and I send my condolences to his wife, Pat, and the rest of his family. But, I am so glad to hear that he was/is a believer in the truth offered by Jesus Christ! And because of Jim's faith in Jesus, he is with our heavenly father today -- and for the rest of eternity!
I took several several classes from Jim at The Spruill Center For the Arts back in the late-1990s. Jim's knowledge and passion for plants and trees, along with his humor, made each class an enjoyable learning experience. He was always thorough when it came to answering questions -- and every student in the classroom had much appreciation for him. I remember him taking the class on a field trip to a landscape supply facility located in Grayson, GA. I was impressed with Jim's ability and he did a good job when I hired him to prepare a "mini-plan" landscape drawing for my yard. Furthermore, he dropped by my house one day to check on a diseased tree. He will certainly be missed by many.

Dear Pat and family,
Prayers and deepest sympathy to you all as Jim is now with the great cloud of witnesses. Taking a Spruill Center class with Jim as instructor was such a delight. His humor, vast knowledge and passion for what he did was self-evident. Jim always had time to answer one more question. Jim was such a treasure, and will be sorely missed. Elizabeth Wong Mark

We loved Jim's expertise and humor. I learned of him on The Fish and then personally called on his talents when the Dunwoody tornado in 1998 changed our forested home to an open landscape. He listened to our desires and gave us a beautiful new design. We are blessed to have known Jim and know he is enjoying God's heavenly gardens now. Our prayers are with his family. Sarah Greer

Dear Pat and Family
Please accept my condolences. It's with much fondness I look around my yard an appreciate all of the advice and guidance that Jim gave to me. From his course at the the Spruell Center to the landscape plans he drew for me to my "bible" Green Side Up landscape guide that he wrote, he's an integral part of the landscape I live in. I can only smile and imagine that he's busy sprucing up Heaven, planting some daffodils and tulips for a little spring color. Much love, he'll be missed down here.

Oh, oh Pat, my heart weeps for you and the family. Jim fought a long hard battle which would have been much harder without your love and support. Steve and I speak of Jim and his "sayings" every time we work in the yard. Rookie plantings (straight lines) trimming Crepe Myrtles," don't butcher them", trimming Forsythias, "if God had intended them to be round or square, he would have created them that way", "dig a $5.00 hole for a 50 cent plant". I could go on and on... You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Mary and Steve

Even though I never met Jim in person, I learned much from his weekly news letters. I sent many questions to him and he helped me over my trouble spots. Each and every time I corresponded with him, he felt like a true friend. God speed to Jim. Hugs to Pat and family. He will be missed.

to Pat and all the family; I was so saddened to learn of Jim's passing. I am retired from Gwinnett County Parks/Rec. and Jim and Butch Wallace are the ones that hired me there in Jan.1985. They hired me on as a Foreman and a year later Jim promoted me to District Supv. One of the things I remember most about him is his fairness with everyone.I also remember how good he was to stick up for his workers. He was the type boss if you were in the wrong,he was the first one in your face; but if you were in the right he had your back all the way to the top and he didn't care who he had to tangle with to stand up for you.I learned a lot from him and will always be grateful for our friendship.Again, my thoughts and prayers to Pat and the family. Wes' Abernathy.
